Baby Grendel is a five-piece art rock band based in Portland, Oregon. It is the third phase of Jonathan Suarez’s artistic journey. Having started out making solo bedroom lofi recordings and eventually developing into the recording project Small Town Sci-Fi, the songwriter from Salinas, California has explored themes of death, grief, and learning to be honest with himself. His past work grappled with deep pain, moving into moments of introspection and exploring ideas of escapism versus self acceptance. While recording his second album with Joe Mengis, the project pivoted to become Baby Grendel, leaning into the art rock sound that was further developed when Suarez brought on the full 5 piece band. The band now consists of Suarez on rhythm guitar and lead vocals, Colleen Johnson on keys and backing vocals, Tomás Sakatani on lead guitar, Faith Loomis on bass, and Zach Cardenas on drums. Their new EP Hatch(l)ing is out now.
